Who you going to call?

ClassicPlumbing1When you need to hire someone to work in your home, you will find yourself in an odd position of power and vulnerability.  You can chose anyone you want but how will you feel confident about your decision until the work is done?  What do you need to know to makes sure the person – or group – you invite into your home will demonstrate talent, ethics, and even respect?

Yes, respect.  Just as you go to work in an office, shop or factory, contractors punch in at someone else’s house.  That’s much more than an address or a small building.  Financially, it represents the largest investment you’ve ever made.  Emotionally, this is the place where you feel safest and most comfortable.  Getting the right contractor is really important for many reasons.

Therefore, use some tips to ensure that you get the right person for the job.

  • Licensing is not useless paperwork.  A contractor who has followed the legal guidelines of your municipality and state realizes that the laws exist to prevent stupid or malicious events.  A plumbing license can help unqualified people from doing things they shouldn’t.  Same is true for plumbing permits.  A qualified plumber will be happy to take out the proper permits and submit to official inspections to ensure that the work is up to code.
  • Insurance is another signal that you will be dealing with a qualified plumber.  Honest contractors do our best to do the job well but there are sometimes unforeseen issues that no one can predict.  We’re willing to pay an insurance company so that everyone can rebound from a problem.  That means both the homeowner and the plumber are protected.
  • Referrals and examples are something that any competent plumber will be happy to share. Job hunters put references on resumes and any talented contractor will be happy to have people to vouch for work done in the past. Depending on the job, many plumbers will be able to show examples of their work, usually for special jobs such as plumbing a sprinkler system. It doesn’t hurt to ask for information.
