At what temperature should you set your hot water heater? 120 degrees Fahrenheit.  Skin will burn in just a few seconds at 140 degrees and in less than a second at 160.  Don’t pay extra to heat water, then cool it with the cold water in your shower or sink.

How much water can a dripping faucet waste?  Between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons a year.  If you’re on a public water supply, that’s a lot of money to waste.  Oh, and a leaky faucet is your plumbing system’s way telling you that things could get more expensive to fix if you ignore the warning sign.

toilet roll debateWhich way should toilet paper roll, from over the top or under the bottom?  It’s just a personal preference, although the majority of people set the roll so that it dispenses from the top.

How does plumbing save lives?  One of the chief benefits of plumbing is the efficient removal of germs.  Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician who lived in the early nineteenth century noticed the correlation between washing hands before helping women give birth and a reduced instance of bacterial infection.  Unfortunately, his ideas were rejected until well after his death because doctors of the time could not accept the idea that they were the source of patient deaths and Mr. Semmelweis had no way to prove his theory.  So, wash your hands and be healthy!

Why are plumbers called plumbers?  The Latin word plumbum means lead; Roman pipes were made from lead.
